Applied Materials is where it is because at the end of every down-turn they are flush with cash which they use to buy complementary technology and provide superior service and products, while other firms are struggling to recover. If Cymer blows their cash to support their stock to please a few short-term traders while the market around them falls, they will never be an Applied Materials.

Cymer set-up a buy-back program and terrorized the shorts, but you can't make water run uphill anymore than Japan or Russia can buy their currencies up when the fundamentals are not there.
