Excerpts.

Austrian Chancellor Viktor Klima and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose country is current chairman of the G7, had a telephone conversation about the situation in Russia, Klima's spokesman Josef Kalina said.

"They agreed that the European Union and G7 should coordinate their response to the Russian crisis," Kalina said.

........
The Austrian chancellor said the Frankfurt-based European Central Bank would discuss "financial and technical measures" on Tuesday.

The European Commission would present its own programme of action the same day, he added.

"We are still gathering information. Klima is planning to talk to acting Russian Prime Minister (Viktor) Chernomyrdin on Tuesday morning," he said.

Russia will also be on the agenda when US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stops off in Vienna on Thursday for an official visit on her return from Moscow, and at an informal gathering of EU foreign ministers in Salzburg at the weekend.

Klima said there was no evidence to suggest Russia wanted to return to the policies of the 1980s and he was sure Viktor Chernomyrdin was committed to the path of democracy. -Reuters
