Index Funds...

Michael:

An Index fund is a Mutual Fund that holds all the companies of a particular index... The S&P index funds hold stocks of all 500 companies of the S&P 500, and will generally mirror the S&P 500 performance...

Mutual fund companies like Vanguard, Fidelity, Dreyfus, etc., have Index mutual funds... Depending on their trading rules you can move in and out of these funds if you are a customer of a fund family... Another way to do it is to use a brokerage firm that lets you move in and out of funds without a transaction fee... Fidelity and Schwab brokerage allow you to do this... Others may also have a group of mutual funds that are transaction free...
