Without having any intention to throw this thread off track, Let me make a comment:

This opens up more issues on the direction of technology in this area. Currently there are several download formats being defined, one of them is Liquid Audio. This is severely compressed music files on the net. The question is, can the files be stored in their compressed state, and be de-compressed as the data is played? Or is the compression only available for download? The key people trying to drive this technology are Sony. Ofcourse we won't see or hear from them until they have a a "player" ready for the store shelves in Christmas-time a few years from now.

My point is, CD-R and DVDs days are numbered. The likes of Sony are already prepping for the next big wave. And downloading music to your PC is only the tip of the 'berg. Where this technology is really going is in the "walkman" direction. In other words, downloading music files directly to a portable player, which would have a built in internet connection. I know this sounds like Dick Tracy stuff. But it's real.

So, can companies like Open Market create products that fit this business model? This remains to be seen....

Correct but the price of writeable CDs is falling faster than the mkt did the past 3 weeks. Also new boxes have much more storage capacity -- remember when 3.2 gig was huge and now 8.4 is about avg,,, in a year??? But the files are HUGE! But look at QVC and Home Shopping Channel ,,,, these are HUGE too so the music end may be less of a concern --- give software and on line shopping a chance until the music tech catches up... months???

I buy a lot of CDs and suffer through a lot of bad songs just to listen to the good ones. So I like the idea of creating a custom CD that has the songs I want on it. I have some friends who are going to buy a CD writer for that very purpose. I plan to do so in the future as well.
