Plasmon to Show Automated DVD-RAM Jukebox at Seybold
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Plasmon will participate in a DVD-RAM event sponsored by Panasonic during the Seybold Show, September 2nd, at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Plasmon has developed a working prototype of an automated DVD-RAM jukebox, which it will demonstrate at the event and during the three-day exhibition. The company plans to announce shipping later in the fall when DVD-RAM drives for commercial use have begun volume shipping.

Plasmon anticipates that while consumer applications are driving the intense interest in DVD-RAM, graphics and other file-intensive applications will drive commercial usage.

''Our objective in bringing this working model to Seybold is to use it as a discussion point to solicit the input of end-users and resellers about their business applications, storage requirements and feature sets desired,'' according to Rob McPherson, president of Plasmon. ''This also gives us an opportunity to work with other industry leaders in presenting this new format as a viable DVD solution.''

The prototype is equipped with DVD-RAM drives that support 2.6 GB single- sided DVD-RAM media. The four-drive configuration has 120 slots, 312 GB of capacity and supports other formats including DVD-ROM, DVD-R, CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW.

The DVD-RAM format features high reliability and usability. It's optimized for random recording of multimedia data. It also offers a migration path to higher capacity media and drives, making it an attractive rewritable storage option.

Plasmon's prototype jukebox has all the features of the company's M-Series and D-Series jukeboxes -- including its reliable advanced robotics -- a unique dual picker mechanism which holds two disks simultaneously allowing media to be exchanged at the drive within three seconds.

Plasmon offers a wide range of optical storage solutions based on magneto-optical and CD-recordable technologies from 78 gigabytes to 2.6 terabytes of storage capacity. With more than a decade of engineering expertise in data storage automation, Plasmon manufactures MO drives, MO jukeboxes, CD-ROM and CD-R libraries and a wide range of optical media.
