Re: PMCS (PMC Sierra)

Thread,
I ran across the comments below concerning PMC Sierra that I can't figure out? I do not know how accurate the statements are. Little too technical for me. Can someone translate this to layman's language and post an opinion. The original post was very difficult to follow because of grammar. I did the best I could to re-write it to make it clearer. I hope I didn't change it's meaning.

PMCS is a design house. They don't even own a foundry. As far as I know, they design chips (contract out production to fabs) for all ATM products. I thought ALL the major networkers purchased their ATM designed chips. I had no idea, whatsoever, Bay Networks did the same sort of thing, but at the layer 3 level.

Any comments from the industry experts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)

PMCS products are based on layer 2 switching. Others have had layer 3 capabilities for about a year now. PMCS is a year behind. Even though PMCS' semi-conductor equipment is used in the phone industry, it doesn't matter.

If PMCS were to enter into the layer 3 market, PMCS would then compete with CSCO, BAY/NT, LANPF, etc., and several private companies. One for example, Extreme Networks, the first company to have true layer 3. BAY is dominant in layer three. With Extreme, COMS and CSCO, etc. close behind.

Until now, I thought PMCS was doing something a little different than just layer 2/3, switches and that's why it had been doing so well. I must have misread my information. In the market share study I read (on layer 3 products) PMCS was NOT even mentioned - now I know why.

I am surprised PMCS did so well with layer 2, but perhaps the recent sell-off a few weeks back had something to do with the layer 2 / 3 issue? Even if they come out with layer 3 products, they are not going to capture market share away from BAY or Extreme. Their silicon are entrenched in a lot companies AND they are coming out with better versions of their own layer 3 products.

Unless someone can tell me why PMCS is better, I will short this stock as the market will recognize it's layer 3 shortfalls.
