<<NEW YORK, Sep 1 (Reuters) - U.S. seasonally adjusted retail sales fell 0.3 percent in the four weeks of August versus July, according to the Lynch, Jones & Ryan Inc Redbook Retail Average. The month-to-month decline put the index below August's target of a 0.4-percent gain, Redbook noted.

In the fourth week of August, retail sales rose 6.4 percent compared to the same week one year ago, and rose 7.2 percent versus the same
month in 1997, the report said. The Labor Day holiday fell one week later this year than last, making year-to-year comparison difficult, Redbook said. Retailers faced the tough task in the past week of besting sales in the same week last year, which included the Saturday just before the holiday, it added. Nevertheless, there was a sense that business fell below expectations for the week and month, Redbook said. Despite weak August sales, however, ''retailers expect satisfactory back-to-school and fall business and see no change in economic fundamentals that would lead them to lower sales targets for the remainder of the year,'' Redbook added. >>
