Ortel Reports First Quarter Results ALHAMBRA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 1, 1998--Ortel Corp. (Nasdaq:ORTL - news) Tuesday reported financial results for its first fiscal quarter ended July 31, 1998. When compared with the immediately preceding fourth fiscal quarter, results demonstrate an improving business environment in the company's key market sectors. For the first fiscal quarter ended July 31, 1998, Ortel reported net income of $0.2 million, or $0.02 per diluted share, on revenues of $18.8 million. A year ago, net income totaled $1.5 million, or $0.12 per diluted share, on revenues of $19.7 million, while in the preceding fourth fiscal quarter, Ortel reported a net loss of $1.0 million, or a loss of $0.09 per share, on revenues of $16.3 million. Broadband revenues rose to $12.1 million in the fiscal first quarter, up 17% from $10.3 million in the preceding fourth quarter , but 6% below $12.8 million in the first quarter a year ago. Revenues from the sale of broadband fiberoptic products represented 64% of total revenues in the current first fiscal quarter compared with 63% of total revenues in the preceding fourth quarter and 65% of total revenues in the first quarter a year ago. Other product sales totaled $6.7 million for the fiscal 1999 first quarter, up 12% from $6 million in the preceding fourth quarter, and 2% below $6.9 million in the first quarter a year ago. On the strength of Ortel's domestic broadband business, total domestic sales increased to $12.2 million, up 31% from the preceding fourth quarter's $9.4 million, and a gain of 39% over domestic sales of $8.8 million in last year's first quarter. Primarily reflecting continuing weakness in Asian markets, international sales decreased 4% to $6.6 million in the first quarter from $6.9 million in the preceding fourth quarter, and were down 39% from $10.9 million in the corresponding first quarter last year. ''We are clearly seeing the rebound domestically that we had anticipated in the cable arena,'' said Wim H. J. Selders, Ortel's president and chief executive officer. ''While our international business continues to be affected by Asian economic issues, order rates for broadband products continue to ramp up as cable operators implement programs for enhancing their networks to take advantage of new communications revenue opportunities. We also saw strength in our satellite communications business where we introduced LightLink, Ortel's system solution for the transmission of direct broadcast satellite for video and Internet services to multiple dwelling units.'' This news release contains forward-looking statements regarding Ortel's results of operations and financial condition. Factors that could cause actual results to differ materially include changes in the capital spending of CATV operators, changes in customer order patterns, introduction of new products by competitors, and other risks identified from time to time in the company's SEC filings, including those described under Item 1 of the company's Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended April 30, 1998. Ortel designs, manufactures and supplies advanced solutions to original equipment manufacturers for the transmission of video, voice and data. The company applies its core technology strengths in semiconductor optoelectronics, fiberoptic transmission and radio frequency electronics to enhance capacity, improve quality and lower costs for broadband cable television networks, as well as for telecommunications, satellite and wireless applications.
