JG - Do I understand the post correctly, in that Qcom's position is that it will take less radio frequency spectrum for a converged standard that it will Ericy's multiple 3G platform stance.

Yes - but only in the trivial sense that 3G requires more bandwidth, but if it is backward compatible then it does not need to be entirely new spectrum - some of it can be the old PCS spectrum without all of a sudden booting off the current PCS users.

PS Note Qualcomm's position inre convergence. Europe allowing in CDMA2000 is not good enough. This gibes well with my prediction that they want to be able to claim 'Install a CDMAOne system now and we'll upgrade you for only a nominal fee when WCDMA comes out.' Of course that isn't the reason they give, and there are certainly plenty of other reasonable, valid and more politically acceptable ways that they could explain their desire for a converged standard (such as the one given in the article 'the global good, and defacto lock out of Europe.'), but I suspect it is the cheap upgrade that is their real target. Tough t****y to ERICY - Qualcomm reaps the justifiable rewards of being first in a risky and expensive business.
