**OFF TOPIC** Paunch, I bet you were wondering how industrial automation ties in with mining weren't you<g>? This was sent out via E-mail today. News From Allen-Bradley Standard Drives u ALCAN selects 36 PLUS Drives for new Aluminum Smelter in northern Quebec Andre Charette in the Montreal office recently sent us news of a major sales success in Northern Quebec. Montreal based Alcan Corporation has specified approximately one million dollars worth of 1336 PLUS drives for a new 2 billion dollar aluminum smelter they are building in Alma Lake St. Jean in northern Quebec. The 125 total drives that make up this order will be used primarily on overhead cranes, material handling (conveyors) and some pump and fan applications. To a lesser extent, some 1336 Vector (FORCE/IMPACT) drives will be used in leverage applications on this project. Charette feels that the contract was won primarily on the ability of Rockwell Automation to provide a complete automation package, world-wide support and project management to Alcan. Where Rockwell Automation was able to deliver Drives installed in Motor Control Centers, with a Devicenet communication link, Magnatech was forced to specify Cutler Hammer Motor Control Centers and a much slower and less efficient communication solution. Charette, credits Ben Peters the Metal Industry manager in the Amsterdam office as well as Pete Morell from the Industry Solution Center in Pittsburgh for helping him tie together the winning package. The final result is a sale of approximately 7.5 million dollars worth of Rockwell Automation products that spans GTS, MCC, PLC R , ICG, Medium Voltage and Motors.
