I moved to CA in the spring of '90, so I missed the local event. Lotsa buildings at work had impressive cracks in them, framed by unimpressive quick braces. As for closing Clark - well they showed that it could be done in a real hurry. But I'll wager that the final cost to the taxpayer was dramatically elevated relative to a two-year phased disengagement, or whatever the preferred phrase is. Worst of all, the then-resident officers were denied the time to ship all manner of purloined goodies back to Dubuque or Trenton!
