Excellent post Gary. I can't argue with a word you said because anyone rational would have to agree with your fact based insight.

The trouble is that the stock market is rarely rational. Investors are ruled by two strong emotions fear and greed.

Greed finally overwhelmed fear today and short sellers did indeed cover many positions. If the market does not get some support soon from overseas or Alan Greenspan then the sell off could indeed resume.

U.S. blue-chip stocks end lower; Nasdaq up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blue-chip stocks ended lower Wednesday as the bulls pulled in their horns after chasing the market Tuesday to its second-biggest point gain ever. The technology-laced Nasdaq hung on to a small gain.

Based on early and unofficial data, the Dow Jones industrial average was off 45.06 points, or almost 0.6 percent, at 7,782.37 after jumping 288 points Tuesday.

But in the broader market, advancing issues led declines 18 to 12 on heavy volume of 895 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq composite index was up 17.56 points, or 1.1 percent, at
1,592.65.
