The Japanese TRIO:

Hitachi said it will immediately close its IC fab in Irving, Texas, a 20-year-old facility that had been making 256-Kbit SRAM, 4-Mbit DRAM, and the company's H8 line of microcontrollers.

Mitsubishi closed an aging plant that had been making 1- and 4-Mbit DRAM and announced its intention to turn the Durham campus into a design, test, and assembly site to serve its U.S. OEM customers' build-to-order demands. The site was to have provided test and assembly for up to 2 million 64-Mbit DRAM chips and as many as 500,000 memory modules monthly.

There was new urgency this summer to restructure the corporation after Toshiba reported a $27 million loss for the six months ended March 31, 1998. For the entire fiscal year ending at the same time, Toshiba's profits dropped 89 percent to only $53 million
