Current PAIR equipment (single unit) can reach 12,000 feet - CLEAN. This has been the maximum due to line losses (resistivity) and wire condition. Not familiar with the dual repeater technology. Sound analogous to a dual pentium computer. Is it 36,000 feet of CLEAN delivery? Will investigate. This will definitely reduce their O&M costs. My question relates to the cost for each unit (capital expediture for deployement). Looks like new equipment to me and we know what DVD players still cost compared to CD players and VCRs.

I'll comment on it myself, thanks for asking.

1. If I remember correctly PAIR did not have a big part of GTE's business (please straighten me out if I'm wrong).
2. PAIR HDSL offering, HiGain '98, extends to a reach of 11 miles (60,000 feet). Here's a refresher:

Tustin, CA --- (May 26, 1998) --- PairGain Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: PAIR) today introduced HiGainr '98, an evolution of its current, market leading T1 access HDSL (High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line) product line. The company's new HiGain '98 systems allow telephone companies to service more customers than ever before, with a reach capability of up to 11 miles. Power consumption in HiGain '98 systems has been significantly reduced and units are smaller, allowing for higher density and lower deployment costs. The new products are 100 percent backward compatible with the company's existing HiGain products, allowing service providers to easily integrate the new solutions with the embedded base of hundreds of thousands of HiGain units already installed in today's telecom infrastructure. PairGain customers are able to phase in the newer products with maximum efficiency, as there is no requirement to train installation personnel and existing inventory can be intermixed with new HiGain '98 systems.

Service providers worldwide use HiGain systems to provide their corporate customers with T1/E1 access lines for data, voice and video connections, and to deploy other high-bandwidth services such as frame relay and cellular.

Today's HiGain '98 products have been developed as a response to feedback we've received from hundreds of customers currently using our products. The resulting products reflect our strategy to enable service providers with a mechanism to deliver advanced new services to their customers at lower costs," said Howard Flagg, president of PairGain. "PairGain is dedicated to leading DSL technology to new levels, and HiGain '98 demonstrates this commitment," he added.

HiGain systems transport data, voice and video at rates of 1.544 Mbps (T1) or 2.048 Mbps (E1), achieving fiber optic quality over ordinary copper telephone lines. HiGain '98 systems consist of line units, remote units, doublers for extended reach installations, indoor and outdoor enclosures, and fully network managed shelves.

HiGain '98 systems are being deployed by PairGain customers today. The new systems offer telephone companies increased functionality and benefits at reduced cost, including:

Extended reach: The new HiGain '98 systems support up to five spans, using four new doublers, with the ability to line power four spans (three doublers) and the remote unit, extending reach to beyond 60,000 feet, or eleven miles, over 24 AWG cable. This feature allows service providers to offer HDSL-based T1/E1 services to areas outside of the previous 24,000 foot range, formerly provisioned by installing costly, labor intensive repeatered T1 or fiber optic equipment.

Reduced power consumption: Power consumption in the line units has been reduced by 45 percent, allowing for higher shelf density in the central office and increasing battery life. Doubler power consumption has also been reduced dramatically, allowing for more doublers to be installed in the apparatus case and reducing costs of deployment. The remote unit also consumes less power, reducing feeder application costs.

Backward compatibility: All HiGain '98 products are backward compatible and fully interoperable and interchangeable with existing HiGain products.

Network management: HiGain '98 systems offer full TL1 management support, allowing telephone companies to manage hundreds of systems from a central Network Operations Center (NOC) using Telnet, an IP-based application. Additionally, HiGain '98 is fully supported by multishelf TAO with the network management features of HiGain systems, including X.25 compatibility.

Slimmer design: The new HiGain '98 systems have slimmed down, and the doublers and remote units are the smallest on the market. Smaller units allow a higher density in the CO and enclosures, which significantly lowers the cost of deployment and maintenance for service providers.

Unsurpassed performance: HiGain '98 systems incorporate several features that boost overall reliability and performance, including; the industry's safest line powering with advanced ground fault detection circuitry, extremely low doubler delay allowing for extended reach and better integration with existing automatic protection systems, and best jitter and wander performance enabling the transport of Stratum 1 clock.

New applications: HiGain '98 allows service providers to deliver high-speed services, via HDSL, to more customers than ever before. The products uniquely support the large installed base of traditional copper-fed digital loop carrier installations and allow HDSL deployment in situations where customers were serviced by repeatered T1 or fiber optic installations.

HiGain '98 systems continue to lead the industry with the same ease of installation and low maintenance as current HiGain products. HiGain '98 products are fully NEBS Level 3 and GR-1089 Class A2 and A3 compliant.
