If you adopt favorable rules like Datek's then stocks below $5 don't contribute to buying power but still count as equity for the calculation of the margin ratio and a margin call is avoided for now.

VD's Portfolio Gurus

This is just a little note from a lurker who has
some experience managing his own portfolio. At
times of market problems I have found it best to concern
myself with the portfolio rather than the intrinsic
value of individual companies. Damn diversification, sell
out of two large positions. You can use the cash to
reduce margin and maybe also make a small addition to
one of your low priced/valued stocks. Hell, I would even
sell MOGN for the good of the portfolio.
