>> economic terms what is happening in Russia now is irrelevant <<

That's too sanguine a view to assess the Russian economic situation. Billions of dollars are being funneled to Russia with no returns in sight. We are essentially paying the Russians for the region's stability but it will take hundreds of billions of dollars, if not trillions to stablize it, if ever.

>> political dimension of it is frightening <<

Perhaps the Russian situation will plunge all of Europe into crisis. In the past, the electorate supported Yeltsin. With the present turmoil and a lot of pain ahead, the situation becomes unclear if Yeltsin will be so highly regarded now. When people don't eat and wages are frozen, desperation sets in. The problems are only beginning and will get much worse as the weeks and months pass.

Phil,
Nothing is happening that we don't know about.
Another "possibility"....I just checked in with Quick and Riley, which I do from time to time in a feeble attempt to get a "feel" for investors' sentiment. The feedback was no surpize:Lots of margin calls
and comments from some clients that want to get back to where they were and then get out.HMMMM?
Regards,
Barbara

In purely economic terms what is happening in Russia now is irrelevant

~$100B in bad loans is irrelevant?
