<<I want men and women to be good and true because it is right towards each other, and not because they are afraid of Hell>>

I very much agree with this statement, but I have a question of my own. What Good does a relentless and vitriolic attack on others beliefs do towards achieving that goal?

YOu cant force people to accept beliefs of good, true, and noble behavior, by attacking their beliefs. You can make statements and show your beliefs of noble and gentile behavior by posting in a manner that shows that aspect of your spirit, and gain infinitely more credibility by doing so.

that said, I do agree with parts of what you say. Not necessarily the denigration of organized religion, but the aspects of an inner god
who cares more of love than he does of ritual.

Sincerely,

Mark

"When Reason's torch burned low, Faith led her victims by chains of ignorance into the land of hopeless superstition, and built her temple there."

After the Apostles and disciples had observed Jesus walk on water, turn water in wine, heal the withered sick and raise the dead to life, would you consider it reasonable for them to deny what they had observed with their own eyes and heard with their own ears? It would have been the essence of irrationality and superstitution for them to deny the facts they had observed. Their faith was based on these observable eyewitness facts! Thomas continued to doubt even beyond these miracles, but even this paragdign of skeptism was finally convinced by putting his hand in the wounds of the resurrected Jesus.
Your mentors were neither eyewitnesses of these historical events, nor do they possess contemporary historical documents to deny these events. All they have is their hearsay evidence concocted almost two thousand years after the historical events had already occurred. And you call these hearsay specualtions rational?

The faith of the Apostles was built on reason and observable facts, and these faith building facts ultimately liberated them from the chains of sin that had bound them all their lives. These same chains continue to bind your heart and mind and makes them reel around irrational and unreasonable fables.
You have hitched your wagon to the philosophical babblings of thoughtless fools and now attempt to poison the minds of others with their irrational tales.
The only thing that will unshackle your mind is a sincere and contrite heart that is hungry for truth and facts. Jesus Crucified for your sins is truth and fact.

Emile

Hello Sam,

It is a common thing for people to fear judgment, whether as a child fearing their parents punishment or their disappointment for something they may have done wrong, or with an adult that strays in obedience to the law of the land. Even if they know they have been wrong.
What is also common is people as a whole resent authority whether it be the just laws of a government or God's righteous authority. Our nature contains a dislike of anyone telling us what to do.
The issue would appear to be misplaced pride such as "I'm o.k. it's the world that's wrong." Indeed the world is wrong but Jesus has overcome it.
Should we fear God? The bible, which you refute, states that the very beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. It also states that by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. Such fear is a good thing.
I feared my parents judgment and yet I still loved them. I can fear God's judgment and still love Him in the same light.
Pride will be the undoing of most who refuse God's gift of salvation through Christ. Mankind's vanity would say we are God. God says "Repent or ye shall likewise perish."

May God grant you wisdom,
John

Sam (from Bob),

<<I want men and women to be good and true because it is right towards each other, and not because they are afraid of Hell.>>

I'm not going to address most of your posts but I do want to comment on this statement. My good works are not to save me from hell, they are for no other purpose than to please God. My salvation comes through faith in Christ and not my own efforts. Most religions of the world are hung up on works to earn salvation, Christianity is not. It's Christ's atoning death that saves us, not any of our own efforts.

I'd like to know what your beliefs are and not what your against.

Bob

Sam,

How is your vehement dislike of Christianity - the religion- any different than Emile's vehement dislike of Judaism - the religion?
