<<purchased GE, Ford, John Deere, Standard Oil, AT&T, BA, MMM, HON, etc. stocks back in the late 1800's and early 1900's have done very well.>>

Joan, good points but we should also keep in mind the American economy performed exceptionally well and enjoyed a rate of growth which we will not likely experience again. This period also saw the decline of the British empire and the rise of American hegemony. The industrial base of America also avoided the damage from two World Wars. We have lost some our competitive advantage due to slackers ( like Pete M)-g- and the rest of the world has caught up in many areas. America has been blessed and is still an industrious nation but I do expect difficult economic times to make stock picking more difficult in the future than it has been in the past( especially at these valuations). Standard Oil -yeah the Rockefellers did ok. Mike
