Gerard--$ is the new gold-- seprated by sea it is haven currency in times of turmoil- Japanese banks only profitable assets are TB's - minus the TB's from their portfolios and you have nothing left as profitable assets, so if Japanese want to sell $ assets assuring them a good return they would need somewhere to park this money repatriating this money to Japan would need big selling of $, that will strengthen Yen-- that is something counter productive to their export growth led effort- to see Yen at 100 or even 90 and invest these monies in Japan with no returns--- US weakness is more associated to return of normalcy in Europe and chances of Euro taking the center stage as world safe haven currency..
