This is really not true. Contaminants like H2S, CO2 all cause major problems with an iron catalyst.

- H2S must be removed from the gas PRIOR to the gas going into the reactor. If not, you get ironsulfide which will destroy the catalyst
- CO2 just gets in the way and doesn't hurt either catalyst but will certainly affect efficiencies of conversion. Best to remove it up front to make reactors smaller.
- Excess oxygen in the syngas feed will cause iron oxide (rust) to form using up the iron in the catalyst and forceing replacement.

Iron is tolerant of lower H2/CO ratios because of its water shift reaction, but contaminants will screw up either system and cause more catalyst consumption.
