Doug,

Start with an empty floppy in A: and turn it into a bootable floppy via the DOS command, "SYS A:".

I think W95 has the ability to create a bootable floppy, but I usually boot my machine to DOS (hit F8 just as the boot is finishing and W95 is about to boot up. You can also start an MS-DOS window and do it from there. SYS is the command which copies two hidden/system files to the diskette and also makes a copy of COMMAND.COM. That's all it does.

Then copy your C:\config.sys and C:\autoexec.bat files onto the floppy disk. Look into CONFIG.SYS and find the DEVICE=c:\xxxxx location for your CDROM driver. Copy that driver onto the floppy. Change the FLOPPY version of the config.sys to point to the driver location (C:\driver.sys). Don't worry about HIMEM.SYS and all that stuff.

In Autoexec.bat, do the same thing for MSCDEX.EXE. The "/D" parameter on MSCDEX.EXE names the device which will service the CD. It is the same name you used in the Config.sys entry for the driver.

You might want to copy SETVER.EXE onto the A: disk as well so you can leave the reference in CONFIG.SYS. Keep matching Config/Autoexec entries to your needs, copying the modules to the a: disk and changing the A-DISK VERSIONS to point to the a: disk. Delete the other lines or just put "REM " in front of them to disable them.

This is the bare minimum boot disk. I like to create MS-DOS and UTIL directories on the floppy as well. I copy the more essential programs into them. Not all will fit. If you want to use EDIT from the floppy, you have to copy the QBASIC entries as well or it won't work. Put a PATH statement into your Autoexec.bat floppy file to provide path names for the floppy: PATH=A:\;A:\DOS;A:\UTIL

That's about it! Put the floppy in and try to boot to it. Make sure your BIOS ("Hit DEL for SETUP") has the floppy enabled and first in sequence for your boot.
