I wrote a letter to IR at Home Depot suggesting that their stores were so big that most people found it too time consuming to purchase a couple of simple items. I suggested a smaller "store within a store" for these common harware items. Well, the reply was that they are in the process of developing a convenience store to serve "the small project do-it-yourselfer homeowner and other customers who prefer a convenient location and smaller store environment". Apparently these will be free standing.
When I ask people to guess Home Depot's market share, I usually get answers around 30% to 40%. Actually they only have 14% of the total $140 billion market, so there is plenty of room to grow. The smaller convenience store market is $50 billion, twice the entire annual sales of HD. There is one HD store for every 400,000 people in the U.S.
