There is in fact a cablemodem standard being developed called the "DOCSIS" standard. I believe the acronym is for "data over cable system interface standard" or something like that. Anyhow, several manufacturers (COMS,GIC,BAY) are planning on building modems to this standard. This standard is designed to support a consumer retail sales channel, much like the Hayes modem standard works with current telco modems.
