Merrill Lynch is definitely a first class institution when
it comes to timing the market. They told their clients to shift
money from stocks to bond 1 month ago or even sooner.
However, they are the one preventing this rally from becoming
stronger since they advised clients to hold off buying stocks
unlike Prudential,Goldman Sachs,A.G Edwards,etc.
Time will tell if Merrill was right ...
What if the market rally continues and 7400 was indeed the bottom ?
Anyway, kudos to Merrill for calling the top ... 6 weeks ago.
BTW,Al Tobin upgraded ASND today ... he was the first to downgrade
ASND last year before it nosedived from 50 to 22.
This should be a very bullish sign for ASND shareholders,IMHO.

they don't need too,

i had a meeting with a friend of mine last week who's been at Merrill since I was a kid (i'm 34) and the numbers that he told me this company does blew my mind. MER is the DELL of the brokerage houses, MER will never have to worry about discount brokers hurting their numbers.

The name of the game for any brokerage firm these days is collecting customer assets. You just don't buy stock from a mer. Even the discounters try to break even on the brokerage business and try to make the money off of margin loans stock lending etc.
