Posts ranging from Eric's to Phillip's to Richard's just prove that numbers casually tossed about like Jobs' 1 mil. figure are of no real use to us. It seems that like most statistics, this million figure has enough flexibility to be molded into just about anything you want it to. Just ignore these figures. Jobs isn't throwing it out so that we can calculate something concrete and definitive out of it.

I disagree with Richard's conjecture that Jobs intends to "tone down" iMac numbers with his "tens of thousands per week" quote. No one is suggesting that Apple is shipping a 6 digit figure supply of iMacs on a weekly basis. That would make 600-700,000 this quarter or 1.3 MILLION next quarter!

Your idea of 30,000 per week sounds reasonable for "tens of thousands." However, Macintouch's reported figure of 8,000 per day or 56,000 per week may also aptly be described as "tens of thousands."

Jobs is not known for giving hard figures to chew on, and the "tens of thousands" and "one million G3's" figures leave just the right amount of ambiguity to keep people guessing. That's just how he likes it.

<<Portables - I'm still quite pessimistic many have got out the door. I'd guess somewhere between 100,000 and 120,000>>

Grab yourself a computer backup battery unit and the iMac is suddenly a portable!

Maybe for Arnold Schwartzenagger.
