Mel...According to Aviron's www page, all the vaccines both for influenza and for other diseases in the pipeline (except maybe Epstein Barr)use a live virus. The reason for the nasal administration is that it mimics the natural mode of infection. A good side effect is that compared to injection, almost any other route usually has a lower risk of catastrophic events like anaphylaxis. The high risk population for the influenza vaccine apparently is getting separate clinical trials. regards
