Hi Mark,

Thanks for the input. I haven't experimented with anything in the way of upgrades, so compatibility issues hadn't really crossed my mind. I suppose I just assumed that everything is always made so it will work with everything else.

Regards,

Don

Mark,
Well put, regarding the state of the PC world. For nearly 30 years I've been programming computers, obviously at the beginning of my career there were no pc's...nor mini- or micro-computers. I was pretty much spoiled by working on IBM equipment which went down for unscheduled maintenance about once every 18-24 months!!!. The operating system, though a bit more esoteric and a tad less user-friendly was even more solid. I didn't get to working with pc's until the late 80's and was slightly amazed that any businessperson would rely on them to accurately reflect the state of his/her business ...and in a timely manner.

I liked your analogy of the different programs being at war with each other and all the pc system being spoils to go the vanquisher. On the larger computers, the operating system is sort of the indifferent referee/guardian. No one can step out of bounds or go where not allowed. On pc's, Windows is right in middle warring with all the other programs, sending some out of bounds or where they should not go. And now we have a new "helpful" technology for adding hardware called "Plug and Pray".

Twenty-thirty years ago, hell to this day, I couldn't imagine someone running a business where the computer just intermittently freezes and the only way to get going is to hit the RESET button!!! Gates is amazing in being able to sell this to the business world. And people are clamoring to get Windows 98!! I understand that it (listen folks) fixes a couple thousand bugs existing in Windows 95. Can you imagine the bugs that would have to be fixed with Windows 2000 if MS were ever to release another similar OS?

Sorry for the rambling. I keep on and I'll get into a rant...and none of us want that.
