ETEC reports above estimates:

"Etec achieved record revenues and earnings in fiscal 1998, despite a very difficult industry environment," stated Steve Cooper,
Etec's chairman, president and chief executive officer. "This performance was possible because factors that impact our business
are somewhat different in contrast to the semiconductor industry as a whole. Demand for maskmaking equipment is primarily
driven by the semiconductor industry's migration to smaller device rules and higher levels of chip integration, rather than unit
volumes. We continue to see strong interest in our leading edge systems; however, the global industry downturn and the Asian
financial crisis have constrained capital budgets and impacted ordering patterns."

Cooper continued, "While in the short-term we remain cautious, we continue to be optimistic about the long-term prospects for
the mask industry. When the semiconductor industry recovers, we believe a shortage of advanced systems designed for masks
with features of 0.25 micron and below will be evident and will drive new growth for Etec and our customers."
