What sustenance/insight do you draw from the novel. There is no special sustenance that I derive from Dickens in times of trouble. It is simply the fact that the characters are so richly drawn that I can use the book as pure escapism. I find a similar experience with music. I cannot passively listen to Beethoven's piano sonatas -- I find myself totally immersed in complexities.

I received a lot of telephone calls that evening from friends asking me what they should do. I told them that they should consider selling only if the companies they had invested in were exhibiting long-term crumbling fundamentals. I advised them to read a book or take a walk on the beach. Do anything but watch the markets.

The point, of course, is that at times like these the market's behavior defies reason, so why try. I think it is better to take a mental health day! I think of those people who sold on those various Black Mondays and I feel sorry for many of them. If they get into cash, all they have done is to lock in their losses.
