I think that it's a good possibility that MO will itself buy back most of these shares from Minnesota ( the ones that pertain to its stock, of course ).

On a different note, what makes you think that there will be " massive
buying " after Labor Day? After a long three day weekend, investors and traders are going to realize that the selling was justified and that they haven't sold enough. MO can get hurt here if a settlement falls through. My short term target on the Dow is 6450, which should be hit in October. Don't be naive, Geoff. We are in a Grizzley Bear Market. The selling is far from over. Outside of the tobacco stocks, ( especially, MO ), there is no good fundamental reason to buy equities here. Earnings are declining and deflation has hit all of Asia and is moving to Latin America. The Great Titanic, the U.S. economy is not invulnerable. Listen to the Stock Market.
