Doughboy: A commodity is something everyone can make and sell cheaply. In that sense, an IC is a commodity (that's why most chipmakers are not good investment, maybe except INTC). With possible suicidal price war, WDM could be a commodity. Then CIEN would lose its edge. However, if you use WDM as a platform and develop something new, that's where the real money is. That's why I'm anxious to see any real solution or product coming out of CIEN/CSCO/ASND forum. Last time I saw CSCO mentioned in CIEN's news was April, 5 months now. Have they together defined anything?

The infinite bandwidth you said is not what I meant. For the existing fiber infrastructure, you can only divide a wavelength span (or spectrum) by a finite amount.

Hi DoughBoy,

"It's like saying semiconductors can be commoditized. No way".

You have to be kidding!!!
Let's take a look at the very bottom of the barrel. You can buy an 1N4148 from ITT, NS, Samsung, Vishay, Toshiba and and and. I can write you lists of such components. The specs from all suppliers are the same. These are commodities in the purest sense of the word. Not even 2 M&M's are identical like these suckers are!

Regards
Alan
