Should the technology take root, I see the following scenario:
1) Advertisements will take forms other than banner ads to defray blocking
technology for a period of time. How long one could run would be the
question.
2) The cost of advertising will increase, stifling the continued growth of
the Internet
3) Under desperate measures, advertisement funded websites will be forced to
use technology to determine if the advertisement was loaded with the page
(this is possible today). If it was not, the user will be prompted to pay
for the services. Be it a subscription charge or a pay-per-use. i.e. $.02
per search on Yahoo.
4) People will ditch their blocking software, realizing just how
*inexpensive* viewing a simple banner ad was.

Or, they will just get tired of visiting sites that refuse to offer them
what they want and visit sites that take into consideration the desires of
their visitors. Sites that have integrated advertisements into the
text...sites that place banners that are of interest to the visitor...sites
that respect the visitor and do not consider them freeloaders simply
because they don't want their time wasted.

And regardless, the idea of ad blocking being of any real consequence is
farfetched, IMO.
