Hi-- Thanx for posting that snip--
<Revolutionary New Optical Switch Technology>

There are a number of "enabling technologies" and innovations that
are required to reach the Holy Grail of an all-optical transmission
network infrastructure. There are also a number of small, innovative
high tech companies that are scrambling to provide just this niche
and there is a lot of competition. What goes into the Optical Add
Drop Multiplexor (OADM) and into the Optical Cross Connect (OCX) boxes
are exactly these innovations.

Ciena makes the OADMs and the OCX's and uses the optical widgets similar to that described in the article about OSC. Take a look at
UniPhase (UNPH) as an example and I think CIEN uses some of the
widgets from UNPH in their gear. UNPH had purchaed the entire
IBM Zurich Laser unit, and similar from Phillips. I mention UNPH
only because that is just an example of the competition that OSC
is into and because CIEN uses stuff from UNPH.

The entire field of opto-electronics is sizzling--in micro-lasers and
all the other widgets necessary to make the all optical network
happen; and this is necessary to support the revolution in data communications. Yup, tis positive for Ciena, but OSC is a tad
lower in the food-chain than CIEN. All these widgets are needed.
