Motorola dismantles its Consumer Systems chip group..........semibiznews.com A service of Semiconductor Business News, CMP Media Inc. Story posted 4:15 p.m. EDT/1:15 p.m. PDT, 9/3/98 Motorola to dismantle consumer chip group AUSTIN, Tex. -- Motorola Inc.'s Semiconductor Product Sector here is preparing to dismantle its Consumer Systems Group and disperse product responsibilities into its four other product operations as part of a major restructuring of the company's chip business. A spokesman for the sector today confirmed that the move was announced internally to employees and that more details on the restructuring will be made available within a couple of weeks. "Motorola Semiconductor managers are currently meeting and working out the details of the reorganization, which is part of the corporate plan to reduce headcount," said the spokesman, referring to a corporate plan to cut jobs and restructure itself. "The move is also being driven by the unprecedented downturn in the semiconductor markets." It is not yet clear how many jobs will be eliminated when the Consumer Systems Group is dismantled. The spokesman could not confirm reports that the Semiconductor Products Sector was aiming to eliminate 25-30% of its workers as part of the corporate restructuring. The Consumer Systems Group, which is based in Hong Kong, will turn over many of its products to Motorola's other semiconductor business groups, which are Networking and Computing Systems Group, Transportation Systems Group, Wireless Subscriber Systems Group and the Semiconductor Components Group. The Consumer Systems Group handles ICs for smart cards, set-top boxes, digital audio and multimedia. Motorola's ColdFire processor falls under the Consumer Systems Group. "The consumer products are still a high-priority, but they can be served with the other product operations," said the company spokesman.
