Truer words could hardly be spoken. But we throw around the $200 trade deficit number (or whatever huge number we use) like it is writ in stone, and it is far more complex than that. It seems to me to matter what things we are importing, and how much in US$ is actually leaving the country. I have no idea whatever how to quantify that, though, and don't know if anyone else does either.
