DragonBoy - Re: "Is it possible that Intel could make the KNI overdrive next year to upgrade the current PII and Mendocino?"

This should be an easy upgrade - provided that KATMAI appears as a 2.0 volt device - that is, as a 0.25 micron device.

The Katmai product should run as a direct substitute for Pentium II if it is housed in SECC cartridge or on the "Celeron" PC card.

A BIOS update may be required for CPUID (CPU Identification) purposes to alert the system resorces that a KATMAI is present. However, KNI-specific software may be able to handle this task without the need of BIOS support.

If Intel brings KATMAI out as a 0.18 micron part (a 1.5 +/- volt device) , the "overdrive" may work if the CPU voltage programming can send the proper ID signals to the "programmable" power supplies that Intel specifies.
