Yeah.. khat (various spellings) had been a serious concern for DEA (and Customs) types here in the US since it was popularized by Somali and Ethiopian social groups in Canada.

It apparently produces a stimulating effect somewhat stronger than coffee.

Also, Methykhateline (sic) was a drug that was synthesized out in the Mid-west by the son of a Chemistry professor and the DEA didn't have it on their "black list" of forbidden materials at that time. (if my memory serves me correctly). It was apparently an attempt to systhesize the alkaloids found in the Khat plant and concentrate them into a crystaline drug.

But none of this has anything to do with a naturally sweetned chewing gum test marketed for two years in Brazil and whose national marketing plan was announced by AZNT back in April, 1997. Sure wish I could buy some... I hate Trident.
