Thursday September 3, 7:55 pm Eastern Time Company Press Release UPDATE: Intel's Fast Ethernet Connections Outpace Industry Growth Leads Industry in LAN on Motherboard Sales HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 1998--Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC - news) ranks as the No. 1 provider of LAN on motherboard (LOM) solutions according to the Cahners In-Stat Group quarterly report on the network interface card market. Intel, with a market segment share of 44 percent in Q2, leads its closest competitor by 12 percent in this rapidly growing segment, according to the report. In addition to being the market segment share leader in this category, the report shows that Intel's Q2 LOM sales jumped nearly 40 percent over the first quarter of the year. Intel attributes the growth of its LOM business to several new design wins with PC OEMs, including the recently announced Dimension V series from Dell Computers that is offered with integrated Intel 10/100 Fast Ethernet LOM. In-Stat's report also reflects Intel's significant growth in NIC sales with a 34 percent increase in Fast Ethernet unit shipments for the most recent quarter. Intel is growing faster in this segment than the industry average and has made a 2 percent jump this quarter, where as the majority of other NIC vendors saw a decrease in market segment share. Intel credits the boost to factors such as strong NIC sales to several OEM customers, including Compaq and IBM, and continued success of Intel's new generation of managed adapters based on the 82558 Ethernet Controller, the industry's first single-chip 10/100 controller. The 82558 is Intel's most successful Fast Ethernet controller to date, combining optimized performance using Adaptive Technology and Wired for Management (WfM) capabilities on a single, highly integrated chip that yields cost-effective designs for PC manufacturers.
