"are the govts losing their ability?" I think someone is gradually selling their dollar reserves. Something a govt couldn't do until an alternative world trading currency presented itself. I see no reason why this should stop. P.S. As for your friends, you can tell them that anyone with the slightest knowledge of gold in monetary history knows that it's almost never NOT been manipulated.
