DVD decoder
C-Cube Microsystems introduced the ZiVA-PC, a single-chip DVD playback solution. The
chip was designed in conjunction with Toshiba,
and is intended for notebook and desktop
PC applications. The ZiVA-PC includes a mobile-PCI interface, an SDRAM interface, and
bus mastering with scatter and gather direct memory access (DMA). The chip also supports
the PC '98 advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) specification and enables
implementation of Windows '98 OnNow functionality. Other features include:
"jog-and-shuttle" for forward and reverse scanning of I-, B-, and P-frames;
"zoom-and-roam" for enlargement of sections of full-motion video; on-chip color,
brightness, and contrast controls; and integrated video side-port logic. The ZiVA-PC is
priced at $22 each in high volume.

For video cameras........

<<Digital video camera IC
Chrontel has entered the market for video camera ICs with a highly integrated CMOS color
digital video camera sensor, the CH5001. The sensor features a 352x288 active pixel array
with color filters, a one-third-inch lens format, programmable I2C serial bus control,
multidimensional automatic shutter control, and 16 programmable backlight compensation
zones. The device integrates postprocessing on the CMOS chip and resultant on-chip
algorithms, runs on a single 5V power supply, and is compliant with ITU H.261 and H.263
video codecs. The CH5001 comes in a 52-pin ceramic LCC package and will be priced at
$19 each in quantities of 1,000. Samples of the single-chip sensor are available with
production quantities scheduled for 3Q98.

CCD signal processor
Burr-Brown has released its new VSP2000 video signal processor, a complete mixed-signal
integrated circuit for digital cameras that provides charge-coupled device (CCD) output
conditioning and 10-bit, 18MHz analog-to-digital conversion. The processor also features a
53dB SNR, 34dB gain range with analog control, 2.7V operation, black level clamping, and
correlated double sampling for extracting video information from pixels. The VSP2000 is
priced at $5.75 per unit in quantities of 1,000, and is packaged in a 48-pin LQFP.

High-sensitivity image sensors
G-Link Technology has unveiled its black-and-white high-dynamic range CMOS digital
imager family for the industrial camera market. The new imagers are based on the HDRCR
image sensor technology developed by the Institute for Microelectronics Stuttgart (IMS)
and deliver eye-like quality images under extreme lighting conditions. The HDRCR digital
imagers employ a constant contrast resolution in increments of 1% over four decades of
intensity, and a constant pixel rate that simplifies data synchronization and all DSP and
compression functions. The 512x256 pixel HDRCR 4 is designed for security, traffic
monitoring, machine vision, and automotive applications. The device supports 120dB
dynamic range, 120 full frames per second, and random access to a pixel or region of
interest. The 0.5mm imager requires a single 3.3V power supply and has a SNR of 42dB at
maximum intensity. Samples are now available in 48-pin ceramic SDIP packages for
$40-$50 each in volume quantities.

Settop Boxes.....

<<Two-chip digital cable set-top box
STMicroelectronics introduced the STV0197 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) link
IC for set-top box applications. The chip is compliant with DVB-C and DAVIC standards,
and is designed to be used in a direct intermediate frequency (DIF) cable set-top box
front-end architecture. The STV0197 features I and Q matched filtering, equalizer,
de-interleaver, Reed Solomon decoder, de-randomizer, and an MPEG-2 sync byte
detector. The device is fabricated in a 0.35æm CMOS process, is housed in a 14x14mm
TQFP80 package, and operates with a 3.3V power supply. Limited samples of the
STV0197 and evaluation boards are available. Planned pricing for the STV0197 is at $9.50
each in quantities of 10,000, and the evaluation boards at $500 each.
