I'd prefer to make a little distinction here -- they aren't really TEACHER's unions. At every opportunity, they add to administrative staffs and deny tenure to promising young teachers who embarrass their lackluster counterparts. The big scandal is in "guidance" and alternative programs which administrations conjure up to bury funds.

Maybe, just maybe if the public schools did melt down, we'd have some real reform. Bust the teachers unions and bring real education back into our schools.

My wife happens to be a teacher in a school recognized as #3 in our large, highly populated state.

She is not a member of a teacher's union.

She tells me many stories and gives me many insights into public schools today.

From what I have learned from her and other teachers is that no matter how high quality the teacher a student will not learn if that child is not receptive OR if his home life is a wreck.

Many children simply do not place value on book knowledge and it goes WAY beyond the classroom and lands firmly into our 90's culture.
