You need only be correct in the direction the market is going ST to make $$ with index options. Who cares if the market is ramping or tanking so long as you own the respective call or put when the market is "going your way".

I would consider most ST options high risk. You could easily lose a large percentage of your investment very quickly (sometime within minutes!). But the opposite is true, too. Paper trade them first and see how you like it.

If you are considering options I would very strongly recommend
reading these books first: "Options as a Strategic Investment" by Lawrence McMillan (Options trader's bible) and "The New Options Advantage : Gaining a Trading Edge over the Markets" by David Caplan.
