I think your timeline for margin calls is too abbreviated. If my portfolio decreased on Monday, I wouldn't get the mailgram til possibly Thursday, and have a few days subsequent to the receipt of the message to deliver money to my brokerage firm. I think it's really next week that such margin calls will impact the market.

I don't believe it was forced sales as HDIE is not marginable and so the broker would not arbitrarily sell HDIE to cover a margin call. An investor/trader may have selected HDIE to sell, but that many people selecting HDIE to cover their margin calls is not comforting.
