I think trying to detect a bottom in this market is not possible, for what drives the Dow right now more than ever are non-US events.

The impact of one of the following could create another major sell-off :
- collapse of a major Japanese Bank
- Nikei index going under 14,000
- military take over in Russia
- currency devaluation in Venezuela
- congress refusing to fund IMF in October

The probability of one of these (or similar) events occurring in the next 2-3 months is, I am afraid, close to 1.
