INTERVIEW-Tellabs committed to revised Ciena deal

By Jessica Hall

NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Tellabs Inc. <TLAB.O> Chief Executive Michael
Birck said he is committed to the acquisition of Ciena Corp. despite the slide in the
companies' stock prices and criticism of expected earnings dilution and revised merger
terms.

"We're trying to provide whatever assurances we can that this is a wise decision, in our
judgment. It is one that has longer-range or strategic implications," Birck told Reuters in
an interview.

"Nothing has changed in that regard. We're disappointed that people have taken such a
short-term view of this...but you have to balance your longer-term future against the
thrill of the moment in seeing your stock price go up," he said.

Why is it strange? CEO's job is to run a company well and serve shareholders' long term interest, not daytraders' thrill of the moment. From his interview, CIEN will be up for sale for sure. Whoever gets hold of CIEN will be the biggest threat to TLAB's future.

Christmeister,

Judging by your comments since you started posting to this thread the only future you care about is your own, and the only "debacle" around here is your portfolio. Pull your head out of your astronomy and go whine somewhere else.

This post does contain forward-looking statements and may indeed be entirely off base, riddled with inaccuracies, and morally wrong. It that is the case then please accept the following apology:

"All right, all right, I apologize. I'm really, really sorry. I apologize unreservedly. I offer a complete and utter retraction. The imputation was totally without basis in fact and was in no way fair comment, and was motivated purely by malice, and I deeply regret any distress that my comments may have caused you or your family, and I hereby undertake not to repeat any such slanders at any time in the future."

Aloha, Mike
