Dear, dear Gregor. I have a real burden. I want, and the Lord wants, all to pray for the total assured salvation of Cleveland A. Quite obviously I love lthe animal kingdom almost more than the human kingdom. There are lots of us who do, and our rewards of having dwelled in this wonderful world and observed the behavior of the little guys with four legs and wings is something that can only be shared with another animal lover. But it is magical, and indeed God gave animals souls, and since they can't sin if they wanted, and since the Universe is quite large, I'm sure more of them will be in Heaven than the human creation. This is certain. To think God would dissolve them in His memory like unwanted garbage and not want them in Heaven is of course ludicrous to me. So, Cleveland, being the premiere animal rights activist in our country since I first noticed there were "animal rights" issues when I was but a little kid, has been in my life since the earliest recollections of reading this and that. I would say for his first 40 years he was about it. Just wrote his books and started his foundation, and little by little forced more and more kindness to animal legislation and changes, now there are hundreds of people just like him. And they have organizations with countless thousands and thousands of people all working for these same aims. So, when he was finally slowing down I got to meet him, and he is just a big bear of an Irishman, totally without ego or pretence, and simply a hero to me. I love this man. God put him on my heart almost a year ago, to try and call, to do something. I put it off. Then it came back really strong and I put it on the prayer thread to pray for his soul. Yesterday I spoke to a customer who has a private animal refuge and of course mentioned Cleveland. She sadly said that things "do not look good right now" for him. She had just been discussing him that day since she had talked to the head of independent big animal refuges. Cleveland is the human Jesus of the animals, to a great extent, and I tried to explain to him that he couldn't be a god to the animals without the inspiration and backing of the real One. But he is not a flambouyant born-again type, and so of course there is concern on my part to be sure God looks with total favor upon him and he in return is turning his thoughts more and more to the Lord. Another thing of interest. When I was in Arizona I spent some months with a huge and wonderful animal people group meeting in Phoenix. Huge room of some of the most pleasant looking, and sweet spirited people of all ages you would ever hope to meet. It was amazing to see the human creation in such a favorable light for a change, to tell you the truth. There was one truly beautiful girl in college who had just shared about one of Cleveland's endeavors, so I ran over to her after the meeting to ask more. Did you get to meet him, was my first question. And this very, very beautiful girl went all gushy and spoke of meeting him, and we were both extolling the joys of Cleveland, and by this time Cleveland was well pushing 70. I thought, "how much he would enjoy observing this like a little mouse..." So, Gregor, he means a great, great deal to lots and lots of people and countless millions of animals. I told him once very seriously that I couldn't accept the irony of him not being in Heaven with the Lord who created all the animals and all the animals themselves, and not him. I still can't, and feel it is most urgent and imperative that you and others pray for his complete salvation. He is Catholic, and Boston church type, and that could mean many things as you know. But he does love God and God loves him, and I just feel right now that his salvation is probably assured, but you just never know. Of course I will do something direct myself, but I do urge you to pray for Cleveland's total salvation, here of course, and also in private as you remind our Lord of this and that throughout the days. I can only say if you knew him you would also love him. And in his flesh he does absolutely nothing to inspire anything but having concern for the suffering of those with four legs rather than two.
