Jamaica's government approves Viagra
Friday September 4, 6:08 pm Eastern Time

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Sept 4 (Reuters) - After months of deliberations, the Jamaican government Friday gave approval for local use of Pfizer Inc.'s male potency drug Viagra.

The Ministry of Health said it had approved three strengths of the drug for use under certain conditions and only when prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.

Consultant urologist Dr. David Wan of Kingston said he was one of the doctors the Health Ministry consulted on the matter. He said he welcomed the approval.

''There's a high demand for the drug in Jamaica and it works,'' Wan told Reuters.

The government said it will review the performance of the drug annually. It said the manufacturer will be required to inform the Pharmaceutical Division should evidence emerge that the drug's safety is other than has been claimed.

The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association have expressed concern about the use of Viagra by patients with heart disease.

Wan said he believed Viagra could be used safely, but added, ''I expect Jamaican doctors to be judicious in prescribing the drug.''

There have been several reports of Viagra being used illegally in Jamaica.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said last month that some 69 Americans who took Viagra had died in the first four months that it was on the market in the United States.
