PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 4, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today submitted for review a SPECweb96 benchmark of 13,811 operations per second for its HP 9000 V2250 Enterprise Server -- a rate of operation that translates into the ability to handle more than 1 billion HTTP requests per day.

This record-breaking benchmark further demonstrates HP's enterprise-computing leadership expanding into the Internet arena. HP now holds leading SPECweb96 results with HP V-Class systems for high-end, HP K-Class systems for midrange, and HP D-Class systems for low-end markets, offering businesses a range of industry-leading performance solutions for delivering mission-critical applications on the Internet.

"A billion hits a day is more than all the traffic for the top 10 Internet domains combined, extraordinary performance for a single server," said Mark Hudson, manager, product marketing, HP's Internet and Application Systems Division. "No matter how expansive our customers' plans are for the Internet, HP has the servers to grow with their businesses."

The HP V2250 server, featuring a 16-way, 64-bit 240MHz PA-8200 CPU, outperformed systems from IBM, DEC, SGI and Sun, delivering a 66 percent performance advantage over closest competitor IBM's S70. In achieving this leading benchmark, the HP V2250 used Gigabit Ethernet, the industry's fastest-growing networking technology. In addition, the HP V2250 used a full, 240-second RFC1122 time wait and a standard solution without a Web accelerator, further demonstrating the robustness of HP 9000 Enterprise Servers.

PERFORMANCE PUT TO THE REAL-LIFE TEST

HP Web-server solutions recently demonstrated superior performance in a real-world environment. HP 9000 Enterprise Servers powered the official 1998 World Cup Web site, supporting 74 million hits in a single day, topping the 1996 Olympic Games Web site to set the world's record for a sporting-event Web site. In total, the Web site handled 1.25 billion hits during the 33-day event, setting a new standard for the availability of mission-critical applications.
