Malaysia-Anwar-Police Kuala Lumpur

Saturday
September 5, 12:30 am Eastern Time

Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister and finance minister on Wednesday. Police are investigating allegations of sexual misconduct and other possible crimes. Anwar has denied the allegations and said he was a victim of a conspiracy.

''Based on the original four reports, police also have evidence that Anwar Ibrahim had tried to interfere with the investigations carried out by the police. If necessary, we will expose them in court,'' Abdul Rahim said.

''We also have other evidence that he took strong and consistent initiatives to interfere with police investigations for his own interests. We will raise this in court if necessary,'' he said.

Abdul Rahim, speaking in Bahasa Malaysia, said the complaints in the new reports alleged that Anwar had ''abused his position so that the investigations into him and his friends are closed'' and ''tampered with evidence in police investigations.'' He did not identify the source of the complaints. Asked if Anwar would be arrested, he said the complaints would be referred to the deputy public prosecutor.
