The theory is that all the certificates will need to be exchanged. This is kind of silly to think it will of itself precipitate a short squeeze. After all the share certificates only get exchanged. If they are being borrowed then those borrowed shares will update.

The ex dividend date is mildly important for shorts as this would be the day that the number of shares that they were short would need to be increased by the amount of the dividend.

Issuing shares of one of the subsidiaries instead of EDII common as was discussed would be a little more complicated, because those shares are not available anywhere until issued as part of the dividend, but then of course they would be immediately available in the market for the purposes of covering the dividend. If they did that though, it would be a rather serious omission of material fact in light of their uncorrected Press Releases now nearly a week after the ex-dividend date.

All in all if there was any inducement to cover it was last Friday to cover the exposure of the dividend. Sorry I missed it I guess.
